In October Steve Kenneford travels to Africa in an attempt to be the “oldest Property Lawyer” to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro which at 19,344 feet above sea level is a pretty big rock in Tanzania. The plan is to summit in seven days although Steve, ever the optimist, thinks it may take him a little while longer but hopes to be done by Christmas!
Steve’s climb is in aid of the Trust set up for Chris Ryan, the nephew of SA Law's Managing Partner, Stephen Ryan.
Chris, a gifted sportsman and naturally talented golfer aspired to become a professional in the sport. He was drawing ever closer to his dream of playing as a pro on the Tour against his hero Tiger Woods and was working towards his BTEC National Certificate in Sports Performance and Evaluation when he suffered a serious car accident in November 2008. The accident resulted in Chris breaking his neck and suffering a spinal cord injury. His injury has left him completely paralysed from his chest down and without motor, sensory or pain function at any point below his chest.
Chris, now 18 months into his rehabilitation program excels at playing wheelchair rugby, basket ball, table tennis and has tried his hand at playing golf using a machine called the Paragolfer. He has now set his sights firmly on the GB Paralympic wheelchair rugby team.
The Chris Ryan Trust aims to raise £500,000 to fund the specialist equipment and treatment, which will help Chris to restore the power and strength he needs to follow his dream of competing as a first class athlete.
Steve says “Chris is an inspiration to all of us, his determination and courage has inspired me to undertake this challenge, and as he says, if Cheryl Cole and Chris Moyles can get to the summit then how hard can it be!”
