St Albans based law firm, SA Law, has raised £9,500 for the Willow Foundation at its annual ‘Smart Alecs’ Quiz night at which 27 teams battled it out over general knowledge and pop trivia presented by former BBC Radio 1 DJ, Mike Read.

The Willow Foundation, founded by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson and his wife, is a Hatfield-headquartered national charity that provides special days for 16 to 40 year olds with life threatening illnesses. The charity was set up in 1999 in memory of their daughter Anna who died of cancer aged just 31.

A total of 27 teams, made up of both national and local businesses including: TGI Fridays, Hillier Hopkins, Natwest, Hollywell Building Services, Alliotts and Handelsbanken, attended the event held at Watford Football Club and competed against one another in seven rounds which included a test of their knowledge of famous songs and recording artists, for the right to call themselves ‘Smart Alecs’. TGI Fridays eventually won the coveted title.

Caz Eagles, Corporate Fundraiser at the Willow Foundation commented:

“We are incredibly grateful to SA Law for organising and hosting this event and to all the companies who donated prizes and took part in the 2011 Quiz night. The support that this event continues to generate from the St Albans business community is outstanding and makes a considerable contribution to helping us provide special days for young adults with a serious illness”.

Steve Ryan, Managing Partner at SA Law commented:

“The Smart Alecs Quiz never fails to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening, and Mike Read certainly added some excitement to proceedings this year. A special thanks to Mike and all the companies who continue to show support for this very worthwhile cause.”
